Ed Reed will officially not be in the Ravens secondary for at least the first six weeks of the NFL regular season.

Reed had surgery in the off season to repair a damaged hip. Shortly after the surgery was performed there was hope that Reed would be ready for the September 13 opener.

That does not seem to be the case, as the Ravens has placed the veteran safety in their physically unable to perform list.

The Ravens will formally announce the decision on Saturday, when the team makes its major slimming to their roster. Once Reed is put on the Reserve PUP list, the six-time Pro Bowl defender will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

Reed’s likely replacement is Tom Zbikowski, a second-year pro who has started four games in the NFL.
